Mayunkiki & Surge

A unique collaboration and performance by Japanese Ainu artist Mayunkiki and musicians from Surge Orchestra as part of her exhibition at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham. Following a week-long residency and cultural exchange, an performance in September 2022 included new works and re-imaginings of Mayunkiki’s music.

Surge musicians working on this project were Artistic Director and guitarist Sid Peacock, trumpeter Aaron Diaz, clarinetist Katie Stevens and drummer Tymek Jozwiak. These versatile musicians brought with them a wealth of experience spanning many genres across jazz and folk traditions.
